Showrooms are interesting, aren’t they? They’re like dioramas that you can buy or, eventually, live in. I’ve probably written about this before but retail is so much fun to shoot because it’s a bit of a post-mortem collaboration, in the sense that someone has lit the space so beautifully for you without you even knowing you’d be coming!

Standard Grooming Co
This salon in Bushwick, just off the Morgan L train stop is a bastion of light and space, probably the two most desirable qualities of NYC real estate. Having shot many salons before this, it was interesting to find a space where the chairs were, instead of put in a row, meet in the middle to form an interesting array and allow for more space around the chairs.
Atlantic Terminal
I grew up going to a lot of malls but there aren’t many in NYC. However, the Atlantic Terminal/Atlantic Center Mall seems to be an inalienable fixture in Brooklyn with big box stores, flanked by an Apple Store, Whole Foods, and the Barclay’s center. Perhaps it’s the gentrification of an area, or the modernizing of an already kinetic junction in the borough. Either way, I was tasked to shoot the space that I’ve frequented so much in the past by its management company.
Enkaya
I had mentioned in an earlier post that sometimes interior photography has led to some other types of photography - so naturally a skin clinic would lead to some beauty shots. Enkaya is a small, but well designed clinic I photographed, and with it a few procedure shots of what the clinic does best.
Salons
I had some experience shooting some hair and nail salons while living in London but I only skimmed the surface until I first starting working with Artist On Go ( https://www.artistongo.com/) who helps stylists find salons in which they can rent a chair. I wanted to share some of the highlights from these shoots here as I have encountered a good amount of beautifully designed interiors.
390 West End Ave
Medical offices don’t often employ us due to their austere, perfunctory vibes but when we do get the call it usually means we have a special place in store. And that’s what we shot here, a serene, futuristic OBGYN office on the Upper West Side. From the modern-art-esque chandelier, to the spacey lighting, the space was more fun to shoot than your typical doctor’s office.
